Everything to Know About the American Eagle Gold Coin

Do you want to invest in an exquisite gold coin? American Eagle Gold coins are what you should pick. It was produced in 1986 by the US Mint. Investors love it for its classic style and certain gold content. The history and appeal of the American Eagle Gold Coin will be discussed in this blog.

Background of the American Eagle Gold Coin

Congress gave its initial approval for the American Eagle Gold Coin to strike the market in 1985. This happened as a part of the Liberty Coin Act. The inception of American Eagles aimed to rival globally recognized gold coins like the Krugerrand. Launched in 1986, these coins captivated collectors and investors with their allure, purity, and official recognition as legal tender in the U.S. These attributes, coupled with being among the earliest coins minted, contributed to their immediate popularity.

Features of the American Eagle Gold Coin

The American Gold Eagle coins released initially had Lady Liberty shown on the obverse side strolling boldly against a rising sun. Her left hand extended as though she were presenting something to onlookers. And her right hand clutching an olive branch. The most exquisite double eagle design ever produced in America was the 1907 design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

The early coins have an eagle soaring high over a 13-star background on the reverse side. Each of these stands in for a different initial colony. The beams of light on the coin represent national might rising from clouds. The 1916 half-dollar “Walking Liberty” design by Adolph Weinman has served as the model. Both of the sides of the coin have the inscription “United States Of America”. The other information includes weight, fineness (gold purity), year coined, face value, etc.

In 2021, a new design of this coin was released. It was for the celebration of the American Eagle’s 35th anniversary. Both gold and silver coins underwent design updates. The new Gold Eagle obverse design now shows Lady Liberty with flowing hair clutching an olive branch and a torch. This side is more noticeable all around. With its side-on close-up of the magnificent bald eagle, the reverse has seen the most modification.

Process of Minting

Four sites around the country—West Point, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Denver—minte the American Eagles. Producing coins with distinctive markings (W for West Point, P for Philadelphia, S for San Francisco, and D for Denver), each of the four sites produces its own variant. Every place also manufactures its own proof version, which is struck more than once specifically to provide a gloss that increases collector appeal.

Struck from 22-carat gold alloy, which contains 91.67% pure gold and trace amounts of other metals including copper (3%) and silver (5%), modern American Eagles are made. Because of the mix in them, Gold Eagles wear more slowly than pure gold coins.
